What Your Dog Can Teach You About Running a Successful Small Business

By Victoria Klejmont | uncategorized 0

Does your dog have an entrepreneurial mindset? You might not think of Fido as the next CEO, but there's a lot he can teach you about becoming a successful entrepreneur. Check out these tips we've picked up from our furry friends on how to be the best small business owners we can be:

  1. Overcome fear with love. Have you ever seen a shy, scared shelter dog come out of his shell and learn to love again? That's the attitude you should take when you become an entrepreneur. Don't allow the fear of failure stop you from taking risks. Allow the love and passion you have for your small business to overcome your fears.

  2. Celebrate small joys. Your dog is ecstatic to see you even if you only ran out to the mailbox for one minute. You can translate that joy into celebrating small victories in your business. Made one more sale today than yesterday? High-five! Got a great review on Yelp? Jump for joy!

  3. Stay present. Dogs live in the moment; they don't dwell on the past or worry about the future. They simply enjoy what is happening as it occurs. All business owners make mistakes with startups. It's important to learn from your mistakes, and move on. Don't dwell on the past, or worry about a mistake that may happen in the future. Live in the present moment and enjoy being your own boss!

  4. Don't forget playtime. Does your furry friend love to play fetch? Take a break from work and enjoy a little playtime. Recharge your batteries, and come back to work refreshed and ready to take on a new task.

  5. Be loyal. Fido is always there for you, no matter what. It's important to stay loyal to your colleagues, friends, and mentors that helped you build up your small business. You wouldn't be where you are today without them!

  6. Be compassionate. Your dog is always there to comfort you when you've had a bad day. Show that same compassion to others starting out in your industry. Mentor a new entrepreneur, and give back to your community. Share your success with others.

  7. Be yourself. Your dog doesn't care if he's acting goofy, or rolls in something smelly. He's happy just being himself, regardless of what others think of him. Remember to stay true to the mission and goals of your business. Don't allow criticism or detractors to change your business. Focus on why you became an entrepreneur, and stay positive.

  8. Be enthusiastic. How happy is your dog about literally everything? Walks? The most fun ever. Throwing a ball? Even more fun. A treat? Best day ever. A simple pat on the head? You're my new best friend. Approach every aspect of your business in the same way. There is no task too small or mundane if it adds to the overall success of your small business!

  9. Make friends. Fido and Fluffy love their human friends, dog friends, and even their cat friends! Make friends with your colleagues, competitors, and people within your community. Networking is key to growing your small business, and there is always something you can learn from your competitors.

  10. Love unconditionally. Your dog loves you unconditionally. Run your small business with unconditional love for your product or service, and you are destined to succeed!

There's a lot that Fido can teach you about running a successful small business. Your dog will always be there to support you on your entrepreneurial journey, and so will we!
