5 Deep, Dark Secrets of Entrepreneurship

So, you’ve decided to start your own business. Hooray! You get to be your own boss. Set your own hours. Work from home. Heck, work in your pajamas if you want to! But there are some deep, dark secrets that nobody tells you about entrepreneurship…Just kidding! There are some hard truths, however, that you’ll want to embrace before you make the leap into small business ownership.

Practice Patience

“Patience is a virtue, and I’m learning patience. It’s a tough lesson.” – Elon Musk

Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a business. If you’re lucky, you might see a profit in a year. But in the beginning, be prepared to bootstrap your business and live frugally. You’re giving up a steady paycheck for the chance to be  your own boss, and that takes time. Because your new company is a team of one, you’re going to wear many different hats. You’re going to write a business plan, source funding, create a website, and more. You’ll have the opportunity to hone your existing skills, and learn brand new ones along the way. The downside? All that learning and growing takes time. But you’re an entrepreneur, and you don’t give up at the first sign of struggle. Or the second. Or the third…

Master Motivation

“Don’t stay in bed unless you can make money in bed.” – George Burns

When you build a business from the ground up, you’re rolling solo. You don’t have a team to fall back on. You don’t have a manager to support you, or dictate when and how you should complete your tasks. You need to set clear goals for yourself, and stay motivated. Motivation is the backbone to your success. You cannot build a business without hustling like you mean it. You are your own boss, but a lack of structure can cause you to procrastinate. Set a daily routine and stick to it. Write a weekly, monthly, and even a yearly schedule. Write down your goals, and hustle like you’re the boss. Because you are!

Work Work Work

“Entrepreneurs are willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week.” – Lori Greiner

You’re the boss! Why should you work more than you need to? When you’re a company of one, you’re going to hustle like it’s your job, because it is. Each day your company will demand that you wear multiple hats. You’re going to work in customer service, marketing, finance, and be the CEO all at once. As your company grows, and you experience success, you’re going to have even more demands on your time. Clients will need you at all hours of the day, inquiries will come in through social media, and your colleagues will want your advice for their own businesses. Even when you shut down for the day, you’ll never really stop thinking about work. If you love what you do, you’re going to want to do it 24/7.

Don’t Doubt

“Never give up. Today is hard. Tomorrow is worse. But the day after tomorrow will be sunshine.” – Jack Ma

When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re going to be forced to confront your weaknesses head-on. Your business is a direct reflection of who you are as a person. Your passion, heart, and principles will shine through your work. You’re literally writing your own future. Your business has to be aligned with who you are as a person if you want to succeed. There will be hard, grueling days when you want to give up. You’ll think about quitting more than you ever have in your life. You’re going to suck at some things, and excel at things that you didn’t even know you had the talent for. You’re going to make mistakes, and you’re going to feel overwhelmed. You have to check your ego at the door. Every mistake, failure, and criticism is an opportunity for you to learn, grow, and adapt. Remain flexible in yourself, and your business. You’re going to have to push through your doubt if you want to succeed. Starting a business is a humbling experience. You’re going to emerge as a stronger, smarter, more successful person. You will be better for all that you have struggled through.

Learn to Love

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do.” – Steve Jobs

You may not love every day as an entrepreneur, but you will love what you do. More than anything else, entrepreneurship shows you the true meaning of love. You will learn to love yourself, your work, and your life, more than you ever have before. Your struggles will lead you to innumerable rewards. You will become an expert in running a business. You will feel empowered as a boss and as a leader. You will have more control over your schedule, your finances, and your life than you ever have before. And when you sell your very first product or service, you will be filled with an unmatched sense of pride. When your business succeeds, you succeed. You will live your life on your own terms, and you will truly be free. It may take time, but you’ll get there. And when you do, there’s nothing else like it in the world. So take the leap!

With a little patience, motivation, hustle, and self-confidence you can live the life of your dreams. Embrace the struggles of entrepreneurship. Running a business forces you to become the very best version of yourself. When you’re ready to research alternative lending options, check out BizLender online or call 855-433-8641.
